Director of Centre of Excellence Islamic Social Finance, INCEIF University
Professor Dr. Amir bin Shaharuddin is currently Director of Centre of Excellence Islamic Social Finance at INCEIF University. He obtained a Bachelor Degree (Honors) in Shariah from University of Al-Azhar, Cairo, Egypt (2001) and a Master in Business Administration from International Islamic University Malaysia, Malaysia (2005). He was awarded with PhD (Arab & Islamic Studies) from University of Exeter, United Kingdom (2010).
He was the first Visiting Fellow under the Scholar in Residence Program (“Program”) with his research titled “Harmonising Shariah Rulings in Islamic Finance: Issues, Ways and Challenges”. This Program is a joint initiative between the Securities Commission Malaysia and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. He was also appointed as Visiting Professor at Urgench State University, Uzbekistan in 2018 and 2019 and an Adjunct Professor at UNITAR International University in 2021. His research interest is in Islamic social finance and topics related to the application of fiqh muamalat in Islamic banking and finance industry.
Before joining INCEIF, he dedicated 20 years to Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), where he held several key administrative positions, including Director of Academic Management, Dean of the Faculty of Economics & Muamalat, and Dean of Postgraduate Studies. From 2020 to 2022, he was seconded to Yayasan Waqf Malaysia (YWM) as Chief Executive Officer.
In addition to his academic and administrative roles, he currently serves as the Chairman of the Shariah Committee for SME Bank and Hong Leong MSIG Takaful Berhad. He is also a member of the Shariah Committee for the Employee Provident Fund and Hong Leong Islamic Bank.
