Julian is British, but has been living overseas since 1992. A scientist by training, with a degree in biochemistry, his career has covered management, technical and environmental consulting, including six years in Russia.
He moved to KL in 1998 to head up an environmental consulting company, before moving to Tioman Island to pursue his dream of running his own dive centre, which he did for six years. During that time he became interested in Reef Check, which he helped to set up in 2007. Reef Check now has a national coral reef survey programme and field offices in three sites.
Julian will be speaking at: 15th September (10.00 - 11.30am) | Resilient Cities and Communities
"I have always enjoyed being in nature – whether it is walking in the hills in the Lake District in northern England, or diving the islands off the coast of Malaysia. But we are doing these places harm – which is pretty short-sighted when you remember that we rely on these ecosystems for our very survival. Sustainability isn’t a choice – it has to be the default position for companies and individuals alike; both need to start to pay more attention to their actions and start being more responsible for their actions".
